When Hogg delivers on the thread of Anthony's function—not just as a manipulative person in the service of drama but as the embodiment of an oppressive aesthetic standard weighing on a developing artist—by having Julie visit him on his own formalist terms, ascending the endless staircase to say goodbye, only to return having simultaneously exorcised a ghost and undergone a phoenix' regeneration—irreducibly personal and creative—just about crumpled me into a whimpering ball. Know thyself and, in knowing, love thyself.
dylan o’brien is one of two men my girlfriend has declared as a celebrity crush, and since learning this we have run into him at multiple parties in town. including this info to explain why i spent the whole 14 minute runtime doin push-ups by the tv and calling it a documentary
hadn’t heard this song before but i like it! genuinely felt jealous of the “car key/patriarchy” rhyme. eminem been real quiet since that dropped…
This one took me on a fucking ride - crushed me and oddly filled me with hope. My mind had no room to wander as each scene demanded so much presence. Miraculous.
Also, I seldom give enough honor to editors, so allow me to be contrite - Bouzy is on another echelon! Some huge moves with the cuts, limiting falling action and reflection at times whilst juxtaposing plot elements and teasing out ambiguity. Very innovative.
Ducournau can do no wrong and every dance scene in this movie slaps!
Top movie going experience with Jordy.
Give me 8 hours of this linear epic shit! More foxes. More swingers. Order/Chaos dichotomies. Most definitely more Barry Keoghan.
But not just an elaboration of what was, give me further trials, obstacles and arbitrary encounters.
No. I don’t want a mini-series.
Strap me to the theater seat and demand unwavering patience.
Sure, postulate a few hypothetical branching realities…
But get me to the Green Chapel for eventual ‘resolution’ at hour 8.
I cannot be more adamant about the 8…
i think the “why would disney make a sympathetic movie about a puppy killer? 😡” faux-outrage is the biggest SNOOZE!! you think they’re actually gonna show her killing puppies? really? think about this for more than 5 seconds then criticize this 324-billion dollar corporation for ANYTHING else! we’re drowning in a sea of reheated, lukewarm content and you’re mad at the one that lets emma stone do deranged glam-punk camp? grow UP and have some FUN!
Big fan. Was able to relate to a lot of the Scandinavian culture pieces and it felt familiar. The fear of aging and losing your drive becomes more real every year, and this movie was optimistic in how to combat it. My expectation is that certain American audiences will find it difficult to accept given the different cultural norms. Will definitely rewatch, and I’m now a Mads fan for life. And the psych teacher. And specs. Everything.
If your viewing experience doesn’t end with you in a pile on the floor/looking up every 80s Tina Turner music video/wishing you could resurrect Ike Turner’s corpse so you can kill him yourself then I don’t know i guess we didn’t watch the same movie.
Simply the best (music documentary I’ve seen in years).
The most conflicted I’ve been about a movie in a long time. On one hand it’s beautifully made and features the most heartbreakingly real performances by non-actors since The Florida Project, and on the other hand it feels like a dramatic Borat with a fake character or two plunged into a real world scenario that is actually affecting real people.
With the amount of actual nomads featured in this movie you’d think they could have just kept it a harrowing…
Ok I am a WGA member so they sent me the screenplay and I wanted to share the whole thing with you guys! Enjoy!
INT. MALCOM AND MARIE’S HOUSE
Jazz is playing. It is in black and white because the stars are Black even though life? Is white.
Malcom: Marie. Marie. Marie!
Marie: you are black.
Malcolm: no *I* am black.
Marie: brb going to make mac and cheese or light a cigarette
Malcolm: ok Barry Jenkins Spike Lee John Singleton WILLIAM WYLER
Marie: Malcolm!!!! 😤
Malcolm: MARIE!!! 😭
i wish i could at least make a joke but i’m just baffled at how empty this is. like it somehow goes against every argument being made in the film about authenticity, or about a film not needing to have a meaning as long as it has heart. bc this has neither. sam levinson just a man with a scholastic children’s dictionary that knows the names of two black directors... embarrassing 😐
