    The Power

Not a fair comparison but it suffers a bit in comparison to St. Maude. The twist is fairly obvious from the jump but the structure is unique and the character work compelling enough that you don’t really mind.

    Hitcher in the Dark

Much better than usual Lenzi. There’s a lot of good character work and there’s an interesting bit of relationship between the villain and the lead that is genuinely as distressing fir us as an audience as it is for her.

    Zack Snyder's Justice League

This is a thing I watched.

  • The Empty Man

    The Empty Man

It’s an interesting movie. It’s got sort of three separate movies happening — not quite simultaneously but with some proximity to each other. All three are great- but executed on top of each other feels a bit hollow.

    But still super fun.

Much more than the dopey gimmick you’d assume. Really fun and, god help me, thoughtful horror.

  • Saint Maud

    Saint Maud

Astonishingly great horror. Manages to be so much more than what you expect and do it in a visually stunning way with brilliant performances and a darker than midnight script. Probably horror movie of the year...

  • Cold Heaven

    Cold Heaven

If it weren’t Roeg the rating would be higher. It’s got some great ideas - particularly in the first 1/3rd as it deals with the weird dissonance of someone wanting out of a relationship and then having their wish come far too true far too quickly. Handling her mental and emotional breakdown is pure Roegian brilliance. The rest is sort of a weird malaise of Exorcist by way of A Love Story that doesn’t quite fit all together.

    Anything for Jackson

So much fun. Exorcist meets Amityville meets Evil Dead 2. And, actually scary!

  • VFW

Totally solid castle defense/Precinct 13 flick made top notch by an obscenely great cast.

  • Shook

Suffers a bit by trying to play a twist that, well, isn’t because it’s so obvious. But the craft and visual ingenuity of thenmovie are truly excellent.

  • The Dark and the Wicked

    The Dark and the Wicked

Feels like an unofficial modern sequel tie The Witch in the very best way. Highly recommended.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Really great. I’ve heard it described as a Groundhog’s Day riff but I’d argue it’s more akin to a Fellini movie. High art meets slasher heart.
