I haven’t yet reseen this, but already regard this as Sontag’s most ambitious, most interesting, probably her best film, and surely her most neglected. I had to order my dvd copy from Sweden.

Never mind the intriguing cross-references to McCabe and Mrs. Miller & Dead Man. This sings its own tragicomic song, creates its own bittersweet space, recounts its own version of the same doomed history.
