Jonathan White’s review published on Letterboxd:
TIFF 2020 Film #8
Reason for Pick - BLM, Regina King, subject, confined time and space
This deserves a better analysis than time affords me now. The film brilliantly highlights views of power and responsibility, how the two balance in overcoming oppression, and what method of wielding power best achieves the goal.
The one thing that stood out for me, though, is how skilled King is. The majority of the film is in a one room set, and I couldn’t help but constantly think about Sidney Lumet’s 12 Angry Men. It takes incredible talent, both on the directors part, and also on the cast, to pull off something so compelling.
I think King will be walking alongside the masters sooner than later.
