    The Stylist

    ★★★★

I think I absorbed a sensory overload in watching The Stylist.

Najarra Townsend mesmerized me as the lead, a serial-killing hair stylist.

Perhaps that's because of my heterosexual bias, though director Jill Gevargizian does not give us an intentional male gaze, Townsend was nonetheless pheromonically compelling. She is a disturbed killer, but her wardrobe, life situation and overall presentation made her unusually sympathetic to me.....yet she commits some of the most grisly murders in recent cinematic memory. I felt manipulated,…

    Stalked by My Doctor

    ★★½

I gave this tawdry little turd a whirl because I needed a palate cleanser. Though it was marginally engaging.....the way that a glance at National Inquirer is while standing in the checkout line, it ultimately made me deeply thankful I don't connect with offerings like this. Director Chloe Zhao is probably a…

    Midnight Mass

    ★★★

The latest offering from horror specialist Mike Flanagan, Midnight Mass was very engrossing to me. I think it is my favorite of his so far.

However, as has been noted, Midnight Mass is not without a few warts. The fifth and sixth episodes do get bogged down by long monologues that can seem interminable. These interludes, to me, did not ruin the story though. There is a lot of meticulous character development which is a bonus for a horror piece.…
