It's interesting how this is framed more like a romance movie in order to explore the actual human being behind the "monster", a decidedly ambiguous title that seems to be ripped from salacious headlines but actually questions the moral judgement of the crimes. While the film itself does nothing really extraordinary with the material, it's still fascinating to watch and features, thanks to Charlize Theron, one of the most impressive transformations and intense performances in recent cinematic history.

A decidedly nuanced portrayal of a gay man in the 1910s of England, beautifully incorporating small gestures, looks and subtext to convey passion, longing and sensuality. The actors are perfectly cast and manage to communicate the heartbreak of the story in subtle, but effective ways.
Deeply moving, despite its length never boring and empathetic in the way it treats its characters.

Enchanting, strange and entertaining fairytale with an abundance of colors and surreal visual ideas. There's never a dull image and even if the plot is not as strong as in other Demy films, the story is still engaging thanks to the aesthetics and great performances from Deneuve, Marais and Perrin.

Demy creates a heartbreakingly beautiful musical world. The colors, the costumes, the choreography, the way the fantastic cast interacts... everything is on point and almost overwhelming in its joy and finesse. But interestingly, there are always darker themes looming just outside of the frame, whether it's a gruesome murderer or military formations that remind an old man of the beginning of the second world war.
But the main characters barely acknowledge these things because they are caught up in a perfect whirlwind of love, coincidence and missed opportunities.
