  • Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

    Mary Shelley's Frankenstein

It's a little disjointed, had the tendency to be both frantic and sluggish, and had some incomplete ideas matched with impatient editing. It's nowhere near as good as Bram Stoker's Dracula that came out a couple years prior, BUT I didn't hate it either. There's some elements I really enjoyed, primarily De Niro's performance as The Creature. It's also fairly faithful to the novel, which is always a plus.

In it's attempt to capitalize both commercially and critically as the…

The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It

This one is tough. I GUESS I would say I'm a fan of the Conjuring Universe, though I've had my issues with them; namely the over-reliance on jump scares and being slightly exploitative for using some real events as basis of their films; none more so than The Conjuring: The Studios Made Us Do It.

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

There is.... so many things wrong with this film.

The most glaring to me was the cut of the film and how it was presented. With basic story structure, the first act typically establishes the characters, their relationships, the world they live in, and general exposition. Later in the first act, an incident occurs to set things in motion for the second act.

This movie has TWO first acts. It sets up the "past" - taking it's sweet ass time…

    Summer of 84

This could have been a 3 or 3.5, easily.

It's not wholly original - "is the neighbor next door more than what he seems" type; but that's fine. It's a decent enough story. Even the execution wasn't bad.

I'll give major props to the casting of Rich Sommer as Mackey. He's probably the most likable person in the film, which doesn't entirely seem accidental. I really didn't know, I was SURE he was innocent, then I was SURE he was…
