    Pigs

Pigs is a student film that showcases some hilarious moments alongside a couple of memorable characters and good direction. The sound may not be up to par, but for a first time film I was generally impressed.

Shoutout to my friend who wrote, directed, and produced it! Full film can be found for free on YouTube here.

    The 400 Blows

    ★★★★★

The 400 Blows is the 1959 French New Wave drama directed by François Truffaut in his directorial debut. The film, which was nominated for the Palme d’Or, is considered by many to be a defining moment in the French New Wave movement, even if it doesn’t seem to fit the New Wave style perfectly.

The 400 Blows follows a young boy named Antoine who wanders through his early life in Paris with distant parents and an unsympathetic school teacher. His…

  • Spooks: The Greater Good

    Spooks: The Greater Good

    ★★

MI-5 is an underwhelming spy thriller that relies on convenience and stereotypical plot devices, and feels like a quickly made tv film. Peter Firth and Kit Harrington both do fine in their respective roles, but neither are able to elevate the quite bland script. Just take Bond or Mission Impossible without any of the charisma, interesting characters, production value, or overall enjoyment, and you have this film.

  • Her

    Her

    ★★★★½

Her Is the 2013 science fiction/ romance film directed by Spike Jonze and starring Joaquin Phoenix and Scarlett Johansson.

The film takes a look at humanity in a new way, looking at a future with complex AI and the interactions between man and machine. Unlike a movie like Ex Machina, Her focuses more on the inner turmoil and emotions of its characters. The film is less of a warning of the future and more of a discovery of what could…

    Parasite

    ★★★★★

Parasite is the 2019 Oscar and Palme d’Or winning film directed by Bong Joon-ho set in South Korea.

The film centers around an impoverished family who find themselves a way to improve their lives through deceit and cunningness. The family is neither truly good or evil, walking the grey line between the two. However, they get in way over their heads as the film progresses and the film’s simple concept gets turned on its head.

    Defying usual tropes, Parasite creates…

The Deer Hunter tells the story of three steelworkers who go off to fight in the Vietnam War.

The film is tense, emotional, and heartbreaking. It shows the many brutalities of war, from the actual fighting and getting captured, to the longterm mental, physical, and psychological effects it can have.

  • Running on Empty

    Running on Empty

    ★★★½

Running on Empty is the 1988 Sidney Lumet drama starring River Phoenix.

The film follows a family who have been on the run from the government for decades. The parents, despite their ideals of freedom and open communication, find themselves in a world of hypocrisy when they stunt the growth of their children by forcing them into a life of lies and hiding.

Running on Empty may be too melodramatic at times, but it succeeds in showcasing ideas of guilt, love, and freedom in captivating ways. River Phoenix played his role with passion and never failed to impress throughout the runtime of the film.

    Us

    ★★★★

Us is the 2019 horror film from Jordon Peele starring Lupita Nyong’o about a family on vacation who encounters their doppelgängers.

After his debut film Get Out, Jordan Peele proved that he had an eye for horror, and he incorporates comedy to lift some of the most tense moments and also provide an air of uneasiness.

Us is chillingly shot, well acted, and the script was creatively put together. I had a good amount of fun with Us despite a…

    Halloween

    ★★★★

Halloween is the 1978 John Carpenter slasher movie starring Jamie Lee Curtis.

The film is widely recognized as a classic horror movie, setting the stage of slasher movies for decades to come.

Besides directing and co-writing, John Carpenter also created the score for Halloween. The music helps to set a tense mood throughout the film, following Michael Myers as he stalks around, and it is thoroughly more effective than what is seen in the likes of Friday the 13th. The…
