Keegan Broadway’s review published on Letterboxd:
Within the first five minutes, Casen turned to me, and said “This is a goddamn delight!” I strongly agree.
I’ve read comic books since I was a kid, and this film captures everything I adore about them. The animation looks like a hybrid between a comic book panel and film reel. Every frame is popping with vibrant colors and frenetic energy. The action sequences are stylistically experimental, but never hard to follow.
The writing is playfully meta, but not in annoyingly smug, self-congratulatory way. Every self-aware reference to Spider-man feels like a celebration of the character. The film completely works on an emotional level as well. This has a lot of fun with the mythology of Spider-man as well. I feel like most comic book films are solely focused on setting up the next film(s), so it’s extremely refreshing to see a film that joyfully explores the lore with no restrictions.
I had a smile on my the entire time. Highly recommend this!
