What a beautiful, beautiful film. Love the cinematography.
When I heard Zhao cast real people to act in the film, I was like, umm, did you watch 15:17 To Paris?!? Those guys are heroes, no joke, they probably saved dozens of lives. But let's be honest, they can't act and the film suffered because of that.
You know what you need? You need a Frances McDormand. She is so great and her skills are so superb, she takes the pressure off the non-actors. In the last 6 months or so I watched Blood Simple for the first time (brilliant), rewatched Fargo (one of my favorite performances of all-time), and now Nomadland. She's getting better with age. I think of her acting skills as a subtle brilliance. So good.
I loved the meandering, shifting storyline. There are McGuffins throughout the film but they seemed so natural and organic I didn't notice.
Strong recommend. Favorite film of 2020 so far.
