Horse Girl

Horse Girl ★★★★

First and foremost, 'Horse Girl' is a movie you should watch knowing absolutely nothing about it. In light of that, if you have not seen this movie, stop reading here and just don't read anything about it until you watch it. Seriously. Don't watch the trailer; go in with exactly all of the wrong expectations and don't let my words influence your experience at all.

Now, secondly, fuck the critics and fuck audience reviews. That's right. This is one of those movies that was made knowing it was for a niche audience and would play with expectations. This is your daily reminder that films like Blade Runner, The Witch, The Thing (1982), Donnie Darko, Primer, Annihilation, the Shining, 2001: A Space Odyssey all famously frustrated audiences and critics alike in their time, and yet today are remembered as some of the best examples of what the medium can accomplish. 'Horse Girl', like many other ambiguous, interpretive audio/visual experiences frustrates casual audiences who didn't sign up to decode metaphor or in this case, explore indescribable, extra-dimensional, nightmarish cosmic horror. It isn't everybody's cup of tea and that is okay.

But wow. Is this movie really fucking good. If you don't believe me then watch this alone in your room with headphones on and feel yourself get sucked in to the narrative and the insanity. This film is deeply personal, brilliantly designed, and taps in to the most truly horrifying fear possible: the fear of the unknown and having absolutely no way to ask for help. I will be thinking about this movie for a long time, and I think it's worth watching for the lasting impression I think it will have on anyone willing to give it a fair shot.
