Zola ★★½

People seem to push back against the "A24-ification" of these kinds of indie dramas, but honestly this could have used a lot more stylization, because the plot and characters are paper thin. The performances really save this from being a lifeless drag, but there's only so much the actors can do with characters that are intentionally one-dimensional. After reading the twitter thread this was based on, I'm shocked at how diluted the film is. The source material would be perfect for a ~20-minute narrated and lip-synched reenactment à la Drunk History, but stretched to feature length and with its more shocking moments excised in an effort to not completely alienate the audience, it ends up being far less exciting and experimental than it should be.
