Terence Davies' autobiographical Distant Voices, Still Lives is the sort of wistful nostalgia that I enjoy. Its lack of narrative focus is something of a mixed bag. I applaud Davies for taking a more experimental approach and focusing on the characters rather than a specific journey. What took me out of the film slightly is not its structure but the overly frequent singing. One can't quite consider Distant Voices, Still Lives to be a musical, and yet, the central family seem to be nearly always singing, even in public places. This element grows tiresome and distracted me from the otherwise effective display of Loach-style realism. Even with this peeve, I still consider it a thoughtful and occasionally moving glimpse at the working-class Britain of Davies' formative years.
