heck yeah, dude

according to the oft-reposted meme, hayao miyazaki once said, in reference to otaku culture: “anime was a mistake”. he did not actually say that, but it looks hilarious to put that quote on a photo of his likeness. in this film, we get to see and hear real life actual human hayao miyazaki proclaim that “filmmaking only brings suffering”. even surrounded by an entire film’s worth of insight on artistry from the master, that line hits like a freight train. miyazaki the artist and miyazaki the man will always outdo an entire internet’s combined efforts to synthesize miyazaki the idea.

this movie decides to weigh in on not one but two 100+ year long land conflicts for no reason, and gives its villain electro-shock therapy for being a liberated woman. truly, ecstatically, spectacularly bad in every way; I cannot fathom a single one of the decisions that went into creating this.
