Ranma ½: The Movie 3 — The Super Non-Discriminatory Showdown: Team Ranma vs. the Legendary Phoenix 1994
the colors are beautifully vivid, and the sight gags are consistently some of the best in the entire series. I love it!

At Eternity's Gate 2018
it is interesting, on the one hand, to film a work about an artist’s unique vision with such a shaky, subjective camera. it is constantly reminding you that you’re watching willem dafoe paint van gogh facsimiles; it holds narrative and a biographer’s attention to world-building at a distance. it’s sort of like a theatre piece in that way, with a greater focus on the idea of van gogh than any attempt to present his life in perfect detail. it’s about the…

Ranma ½ OVA 7: Reawakening Memories (1) 1994
just okay! ends on a cliffhanger before it can really do anything interesting. seems like part two is going to pull a rare feat and spotlight ranma’s jealousy at the thought of losing akane, wish it didn’t take so much preamble to get there!

Pacific Rim 2013
man, I promise I tried to turn my brain off and have a good time with this. I had my dominoes pizza and coke zero all fresh and ready for maximum fun!
I did not have maximum fun. the dialogue serves as a sort of patch job over the mostly-alright big robot fights, which would not be a problem if said dialogue were not completely soaked in cliche and delivered with all the gumption and dishonesty of a youth pastor. if this were animated it would not even crack my top twenty mecha series, even if it does have cooler pilot suits than Gundam Wing.

Ranma ½: The Movie 2 — The Battle of Togenkyo: Rescue the Brides! 1992
having just rewatched the first season of the TV series, seeing these characters animated in glistening cinema quality conjures a unique kind of heart warmth. the scenario here is more interesting than your standard fare multi-episode arc, and it gives the animators license to go hog-bonkers creating new and vibrant looks for each character for the sake of this Special Theatrical Event. that’s all I can ask of an anime movie like this! it certainly does a better job of justifying its existence and run time than any of those dragon ball z movies

Lupin the Third: The Castle of Cagliostro 1979
pure, unrelenting, jaw-stiffening joy. a smile is slapped on your face in the first minute and is never given a chance to fade; guaranteed.

Ranma 1/2: The One to Carry On (Part One) 1994
leans hard into the standard formula of what to do with these characters, so much so that the writing math practically peeks out of the corners of the frame. I just happen to love this formula a lot.
