    The Matrix Resurrections

The Matrix Resurrections is a miracle of a film. In a year where blockbusters have largely been overstuffed, forgettable CGI-fests, Lana Wachowski returns to the world that made her and her sister cinematic legends with one of the most refreshing and emotional big-budget films of the past few years.

Coming hot off a decade that saw reboots and long-delayed sequels as the biggest moneymakers in Hollywood, The Matrix Resurrections understands that nostalgia is both good and bad. Toying right from…

This review may contain spoilers. I can handle the truth.

Recently I wrote a long feature essay on the films of Julia Ducournau, who has fast become one of my favorite directors working today. I've now seen Titane 3 times, and I think I'll be watching it once more before the year has ended. I can only wish to make something as bold, shocking, and emotionally rich as this in my lifetime. The following is an expert from the article, which you can read in full at the following link:…

    Hollow Man

It's kind of telling that what's considered a lesser Paul Verhoeven film ends up being as enjoyable and messed up as this is! Effects are dated but…

    Vampire Hunter D

Continuing my current obsession with vampire-themed media by finally watching the first film of Vampire Hunter D. The great game franchise Castlevania borrowed quite a lot from the manga on a visual level (a whip as a main weapon, anyone?), and I was marginally familiar with the series thanks to (of course) a video game that came out on the PS1.

Vampire Hunter D is a cool fantasy horror anime with quite a few weird elements. The animation is very…

    Last Night in Soho

Last Night In Soho is a terrific and terrifying ghost story, hearkening back to the golden age of horror cinema from the '60s and '70s. The craft is impeccable, McKenzie is a star in the making, and the soundtrack is hauntingly beautiful. Loved it!

Right now I got to tell you about the fabulous, most groovy experience of the year:

74th Venice Film Festival. The man himself, Edgar Wright, was a member of the main jury. Knowing that, I set out immediately to see him, and on my first day (August 30th) I saw him with the rest of the jury members (including Annette Benning and Rebecca Hall). I was stunned, and stood still, with my mouth wide open. I thought it could never…
