completely flawless in execution, simplicity at its most complex. possibly the closest a film can get to being perfect in all aspects

edit: also bresson would occupy a fifth favourite film spot at all times if LETTERBOXD HAD MORE SPACES TO DO JUST THAT

surpasses most modern day superhero films tbh

timeless. complete mishmash of every japanese tokusatsu property that was famous at the time (kamen rider and ultraman) - being rooted firmly in its japanese influences, while remaining very much hong kong with its fights - a perfect combination that leads to some of the greatest shit you'll ever see in a toku film or in any other action film, really

mizoguchi hasn't been pulling on my heatstrings as much as i'd hope his films would, but this one finally managed to move me - in a very immense way. it is lush, graceful and elegant - but it would seem the movements of the world would always find some way to reduce that into nothing. ambitions and greed over all

    fun as FUCK

mythical gods engaging in brutal beatdown. much more fantastical than i expected it to be - though grounded still in the realm of science fiction. the action in this is pure serotonin - long takes, minimal cuts to human characters unlike the previous three legendary kaiju films that were plagued with such. when the monsters are on screen - this film fucking nails it, but everything else is serviceable at best (not including the visuals, this film looks sublime)

    ★★½

mind-numbingly boring, and here i was - mildly excited by its visuals and narrative a few hours ago, only for it to be squashed as the film went on as it riffed from films much better that have come before to poor effect. it really tries its best to make the characters relatable but alas, they still feel like caricatures at the end of it all

at least it's pretty to look at i suppose, though it doesn't save it nor redeem it in any way

i actually chose to watch this over ikiru too smh
