I had fun, but it lowkey felt like sitting through an entire season of an HBO series that would not let me pause between episodes....... Overdrawn subplots, confusing repeat of racist jokes (don't worry, we PLENTY get it the first time), and it's annoyingly such a male fantasy movie. On the bright side, I went from not getting Alana Haim at all to being quite charmed.

    70mm. Alamo Drafthouse.

Elegant camerawork always seems to conceal a secret. Especially loved the feverish orange sequence.

It does...subvert normality... something Cebe (Linda Manz) keeps shouting throughout the movie. Abuse never looks one specific way; on screen, it is as mesmerizing as it is harrowing to ride along with the chaos, to observe the generational dysfunction. This film captures it so successfully that it is uncomfortable to watch.

It's also fascinating to watch the fabric of a specific subculture weave itself into the story. Manz makes this movie and has somehow inherited the unhinged genes from Hopper.…

A perfect film. I almost called it Bring It On for the boys but it’s actually for the girls (*queens).

I didn’t have letterboxd then but watching this on 35mm and popping open a snuck-in bottle of champagne in the Metrograph balcony still remains my favorite cinematic experience.

I scarfed down a hot dog outside of MoMA right before the movie and I feel like it was stuck in my throat the entire time; absolutely nauseating… Anyway, I never want to watch this movie again but I respect that it roused a reaction (watching a movie like this at MoMA is fun cuz of the geriatric crowd; two old women in the bathroom: “MoMA puts on some sick movies! I cannot believe a woman directed that!”).

    There’s obviously…

    The Souvenir Part II

Her entire crew being like "what is this movie about" was literally me watching The Souvenir part 1 :( Part II was better in my opinion... but as someone trying to work through heartbreak through autobiographical art herself, I don't know why I still feel such a disconnect. (I write this two hours after leaving the cinema and I admittedly like it better now, in my head, than when I was actually watching it...I think.)
