Kaleb’s review published on Letterboxd:
Sound of Metal has some of the best sound design I’ve ever heard. My mom has been slowly going deaf, and when we started hearing from Ruben’s POV my mom said that’s exactly what she hears, and it helped me understand it.
The story is pretty simple, a drummer loses his hearing and we watch him cope, but it’s so much more. The conversations Ruben has with Joe are truly fantastic, and enhanced by the incredible performances. Riz Ahmed gives an Oscar worthy performance as Ruben. He goes through a lot of emotions, and he crushes it in every scene. Paul Raci is another standout as Joe. I would go as far to say he’s Oscar worthy as well. Olivia Cooke is great in the scenes she’s in, and I’m glad to see her getting more serious roles.
Darius Marder is someone I had honestly never heard of, but he will be someone I’m keeping my eye out for. He has such a great style that works for this movie making it feel so much more personal.
If you haven’t checked this out yet I highly recommend it to everyone. It’s amazing.
