Safety Not Guaranteed ★★★

Great balance of quirk and darker themes of love/loss/longing really sold strongly by Plaza's perf, which, while largely similar to April on Parks & Rec, brings a true sense of empathy and connection to the central relationship despite Duplass's utter lack of any chemistry, charm or personality. Johnson also gives a very strong performance despite the cliches of the character (guarded/wounded playboy covering self-consciousness with bravado). Overall, the screenplay is the film's greatest weakness, plenty of cliches of the lost loves these characters seek to reclaim/replace to make them whole, as well as some really rote character types like Rajskub's bitchy manager or Soni's tactless labgeek.
