Double Indemnity ★★★★

A solid, clearly influential noir.

Billy Wilder's dynamic direction, an intriguing procedural focus on the execution of the central crime, and Barbara Stanwyck's intense performance keep the wheels greased enough that it becomes easy to forget we're watching a nihilistic story with a terrible man at its center.

Speaking as someone who spent part of her childhood in a small Oregon town, scene-stealer status goes to a certain supporting character who nails the eccentricities of old people from small Oregon towns.
