Rope ★★★★

A slightly less accomplished precursor to M for Murder. This is at its best when it’s just rich socialites sniping at each other with loaded guns of contemptuous charm - the something with someone discussion at the coffin buffet table has a laconic laugh laden on every line and it makes for incredible bloodsport.

The murder plot and its limp philosophical motivations are less engaging (the film really shows its decrepitcy by hanging its homburg on Freud and Nietzche), but the metronome interrogation and red-light/green-light standoff are easily two of Hitch’s best suspense-ratcheters.
