12:59pm - Hal's Birthday
I'm a little tired and hungry, but I've got a calzone heating up in the toaster oven, so the hungry part won't last too much longer. I'm pretty excited for this rewatch. I put this film on a lot at work because it's good background noise and it's nice to look up at every once and a while, but I haven't actually sat down and gave it my full attention in years. This is just going to be my thoughts as I watch the film, I'm not going to delve too deep or try to figure anything out.
So here we go:
The Strauss piece starts and all I can think about is Captain Picard saying, "space, the final frontier."
The Dawn of Man:
The front screen projection looks really good.
(Have to pause and eat my calzone now...........)
Ok. 1:18pm and back to the film. The calzone was lovely, by the way. It had spinach, artichoke hearts, mushrooms, garlic ricotta, and pesto on top. Very satisfying.
The cheetahs eyes are glowing too much.
The ape smashing the bones looks a bit like Nick Cave.
Do apes eat meat? I thought they were vegetarians?
The babies are so cute!
And now we're in space.
The music is perfect.
(Have to pause again to Skype with my cute boyfriend.)
Ok. 2:50pm. My little English muffin is sleeping now, so I can get back to the film. The pen's floating through the cabin....
I wonder what the equation on the captain's screen is. It's shown 3 times and zooms in closer each time, so it must be something important.
Fucking LOVE those red chairs.
Picturephone = Skype
What the hell is a bush baby?
So glad we don't have to drink our meals.
I'd like to read all of those instructions for the zero gravity toilet. My tv is big, but they're still pretty blurry when I pause. I can only make out bits and pieces. It's like a novel though. That poor guy probably has to take a shit and instead he has to spend about an hour reading that.
Astronauts don't like crusts on their sandwiches.
The monolith really does look like an iPhone 5.
The monolith doesn't like to have it's picture taken.

Dave is a babe.
He's floating a long way to that satellite. You'd think he'd bring the pod a little closer.
I like how mission control refers to HAL as "niner triple zero."
Intermission: made some chick'n burgers. Put BBQ sauce and a shit load of English mustard on them. Having some BBQ chips too. Quite a delicious little meal. The English mustard is so spicy and good!
These guys should've known better than to fuck with HAL.
"I'm sorry, Dave. I'm afraid I can't do that."
Look, Dave, HAL feels better now. Don't break up with him, Dave. Things will get better. C'mon, Dave. Stop, Dave. Dave.

Jupiter and Beyond the Infinite:
This color tunnel scene and all the weird blobs and kaleidoscopes that come after it would be amazing to watch on acid.
Hehe. I love this.
I love the room Dave ends up in. The lighted floor, the furniture, the paintings, it's gorgeous.
Fetuses, however, look disgusting.
I still have no idea what it all means.
