Shawn Palmquist’s review published on Letterboxd:
Really was not expecting this to be anywhere near as good as it was. I watched the uncut version, and let me just say...this thing is BRUTAL, both visually and thematically. It's been a while since I've seen something so viscerally thrilling yet horrifying.
This is the perfect example of a movie you must must must be ready for. It's not really a movie you casually enjoy, this is something that gets into your head (ironically enough) and doesn't loosen it's grasp...even after it's over. While watching, it doesn't necessarily feel like a horror movie, but contemplating it after finishing watching it sort of turns into one upon retrospection.
I won't really get into the plot too much here, because I think this probably works best to go into blind (especially the opening scene). Here's how I'd best describe the barometer of if you'll like this movie or not:
If you enjoyed the visual style and experimentalism that Panos Cosmatos created with Mandy or Beyond the Black Rainbow, but found those to be a little too abstract or vague in terms of story...Possessor will hit your sweet spot. It has that same general vibe of those films, but it contains a narrative structure that's much easier to follow.
I haven't stopped thinking about this one since finishing it. I'm now officially on the Brandon Cronenberg hype train and can't wait to see what he does next.
