2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★★★

IMAX at Shaw House.

Still amazing. What an experience, truly beautiful.

I got into Kubrick because I was captivated by what Nolan achieved in Interstellar. I found it thorougly entertaining but 2001 both stunned and shocked me. I also have a bias for it because it's the first film that made me fall in love with film.

The memory eludes me but I sort of remember watching this for the first time on my laptop. Like most people, I was needless to say, very perplexed by the first 20 minutes. An hour into the film I was taken by the visuals but still struggled to comprehend the narrative. By the end of the film I was left utterly confused and wondered if I was missing something. I didn't hate it, but I couldn't appreciate it. That was my first experience with Kubrick.

Over the next few years, I revisited the film several times. With each viewing my love for it grew, and after reading up on countless interpretations I realized what the issue had been the first time. Quite simply, I had just expected something different.

It's been said time and again that 2001 is not just a film, but an experience. Cliche as it seems, I hold that statement to have a measure of truth in it. Kubrick had given us something that was extremely bold for its time, and 50 years later very few films have managed to match the audacity of it.
