The main thing that puts it a little higher than ‘fine’ is the 70s vibe it has. I think it all looks both really 70s cool and 70s dopey, I like that. Other than that the story feels a little generic, part of coming of age, part things slowly escalating. The latter part follows all the expected beats, including a mildly spoilery opening in the present day that serves no purpose other than taking some tension away.

    The characters all…

It’s a cute ensemble period movie with a lot of big 1920s Hollywood people concerning an alleged incident on a luxury yacht. No pun intended, but it does run out of steam. I think the most memorable moments are the lighter, party scenes with lots of pretty costumes, Charleston and moonshine.

Dunst really shines, and I think she had a great 20s face. I also enjoy Lumley and Tilly. The male cast is much less interesting.

I used to watch this a lot in the early 2000s because I had taped this from tv on an old VHS, but it’s honestly an okay but forgettable movie.

The pacing is off, every character is underdeveloped or gets abandoned, the sound seemed off too. The main character’s only character trait is that she is a doormat. I know these types of romantic comedies are popular in NL, or at least there are a lot of them, and most of them are bad but have some kind of charm. This one doesn’t. This was so bad, but also so boring.

It took this movie 40 minutes to finally get…

I enjoyed the parts more than the sum. I enjoyed creepy Christopher Lee, the music and dancing, the angry and inconsistent teenage moods, the lingo, the striptease. I am not sure if the story was all that coherent, or accurate (I feel like this is an outsider’s idea of what beatniks are, but I am not an expert), but I enjoyed the combination of teenage angst and the dangers of striptease/prostitution.

    So it’s an enjoyable mess.
