Sound of Metal

Sound of Metal ★★★★½

Ruben. As you know, everybody here shares in the belief that being deaf is not a handicap. Not something to fix.

Given that it’s been non - stop raining all day (typical England), I thought today was ideal to sit down and delve into Sound of Metal. I’ve seen plenty of raving reviews about how worthy this film is, and although this is not my usual style at all, I bloody loved it.

This film has a ‘true story’ feel to it, despite being completely fictional. We follow Ruben, who’s an interesting lead character, as he comes to terms with his sudden deafness. Although it took a while to get going, once it found it’s groove, I was completely hooked. The whole plot was not only enjoyable, but surprisingly eye - opening. It makes you think and appreciate things a lot more.

Riz Ahmed is absolutely fantastic. He carries the majority of this film on his shoulders, and does so effortlessly. Hollywood: give Riz Ahmed more roles! Olivia Cooke and Paul Raci are marvellous too, alongside the rest of the cast.

Sound of Metal deserves every Oscar award (especially Best Sound) and rave review. I’m annoyed at myself for not watching this sooner — I would probably say this is one of the best films I’ve watched recently. Perhaps I’ll have to take a look at some of the other Oscar winners.
