Army of the Dead

Army of the Dead ★★★½

Zack Snyder's 'Army of the Dead' brings back the summer hype of blockbusters. I might go so far as to say he is actually the only one right now that gives a dose of popcorn entertainment this year. Marvel gave us a couple of shows, but they're babies compared to this film and Snyder's cut. This movie is everything you expect from Snyder. It is pulpy, stylistic, flashy, and with cool ass action. I don't think Zack has ever failed in terms of the technical side of filmmaking and is definitely one of the best directors that know how to make his own movies visually pleasing. Though the choice of selective and shallow focus adds a nice touch, it certainly consists in the film more than it should.

Dave Bautista is our leading man, and that's the only option because he is born to be in a movie full of zombies and macho vibes. He progresses each time I see him in a new movie, and his depth as an actor has gotten better. The Rock, Who? Anyways, the rest of the cast is decent, but really cliché characters all-around. The father and daughter's relationship has a dramatic pull, especially towards the end of the movie. Our main zombie characters have their own little humane story going on, which was cool to see. I don't know the last time I saw zombies with feelings, man.

Army of the Dead truly excels when the action takes place. We get to see many heads being blown off, explosions, a zombie tiger, etc. There are enough gore elements. Also, some sequences are tense, and I truly felt the sense of danger. The story itself is nothing spectacular, and in this case, maybe it shouldn't be, but it goes down the same rabbit hole that we have seen not only from Snyder but from Hollywood in general. The movie does its job efficiently well, and that's what matters. Zack has done it again, and by the looks of it, he will not stop anytime soon.
