Chris Chretien’s review published on Letterboxd:
Catching up with forgotten 90s Horror films is so fun, particularly when you find a movie series like this one that you have never seen.
I loved all of the gothic locations, such as the castle and the ruins and I also loved the verdant Romanian countryside and architecture. I have no doubt that Romania is a beautiful country and the perfect setting, coupled with an eldritch atmosphere that allowed the movie to come alive and give you that goosebumps feeling.
As far as vampires go, Radu (Anders Hove) was fairly awesome, and those fingers of his were freaky as hell. However, Radu's voice was truly divine, which for me, allowed the character to become highly memorable. His demonic minions reminded me of the very same little demons in Tibor Takács The Gate, where I wonder if Ted Nicolaou got the inspiration from.
Our three main actresses, Mara (Irina Movila), Michelle (Laura Mae Tate), and Lillian (Michelle McBride), were highly attractive ladies that gave strongly convincing performances that had great chemistry together. I enjoyed their characters so much that I was even rooting for Mara and Lillian, as vampires, to defeat Karl (Ivan J. Rado) and Stefan (Michael Watson), but sadly though, they lost.
The downer for me in this film was the slightly bland script, which caused the movie to drag a tad in places and the confusing plot involving the Bloodstone artifact. What was the Bloodstone and what was its purpose? This was never fully explained.
Other than that, I enjoyed the movie and look forward to the sequels.
