Chris Chretien’s review published on Letterboxd:
This will be one of those movies that you either love or hate. Regretfully for me, I hated it. To be honest, the redneck/backwoods/mutant hillbilly Horror subgenre has never been my thing with a rare few exceptions, such as Wes Craven's original 1977 classic The Hills Have Eyes or Tobe Hooper's original 1974 classic The Texas Chain Saw Massacre. I have also seen Rob Schmidt's 2003 original Wrong Turn film and it was an awesome Horror, as well.
This reboot was frustrating to watch and borrowed heavily from several other films. The stereotypical Horror tropes permeated the entire movie and just took me out of the story. Also, what fucking subgenre was this? Seemed like the Mike P. Nelson could not decide if this was a cult Horror, backwoods Horror, or a survival Horror.
If it wasn't for Matthew Modine's (Jen's dad Scott) appearance and solid performance, I probably would have turned this off after half-way. I found all the other characters either bland, annoying, or just there to be used as cannon fodder. Charlotte Vega (Jen) had a glimmer of hope but just couldn't rise above being cast as nothing more than eye-candy to me. And don't get me started on that absolutely lazy and atrocious ending! It's a shame that even the beautiful Appalachian mountain wilderness couldn't influence my feelings towards this movie.
Sorry guys, I would not recommend this film to anyone I am friends with as I value their friendship, including yours LB friends. Definitely not my jam!
