Irvin Malcolm’s review published on Letterboxd:
A Jewish teenage girl is sent to a concentration camp. She tries to survive by posing as a dead non-Jewish prisoner and becoming a prison guard or "Kapo". This is from Gillo Pontecorvo who made Battle of Algiers. There are some truly harrowing scenes in that one. There are some harrowing scenes in this one too and some powerful moments. But the scenes wallow a bit much on misery and becomes a bit repetitive. The film picks up in the third act though and climaxes into a superb sequence. But it takes a while to get there. It is held together by the excellent performance of Susan Strasberg in the titular lead role. It's overall a good film but not a masterpiece.
