Finally a Kaufman scripted film clicks for me.
I was always finding that I loved the ambitious ideas he writes about but I always found them more entertaining in theory than what I was actually watching on screen. Not here though.
Every scene had me entrained and every idea felt like it was represented visually in a way that was just as fulfilling as it is intellectually. Have to give huge credit to Spike Jonze as well. I wasn't as pleased with how Adaptation came together but here he masterfully balances such a dense, mind-bending, and hilarious concept/script.
Man I love movies.
Was it a little cheesy, yes. Was it a little overdramatic, definitely. Was the editing a little distracting, yeah.
Was I engaged and entertained the whole time, you bet.
The Trail of the Chicago 7 is a very "movie" movie and a crowd pleaser but it never really claims to be anything different. With a screenplay that fires on all cylinders and strong performances all around it is definitely the most gripping and engaging film of the year.
Gena Rowlands is an absolute master of playing sympathetic crazy. 90% percent of the time you have no idea what is going on in her head but you feel every emotion.
The movie is pretty good as well. Those last 20 minutes, I have never seen something quite like that in film but man did it put a smile on my face.
