Jonny’s review published on Letterboxd:
Pan's labyrinth is a tough one, but I liked it.
I really enjoyed the main plot, which is where most of the style, creatures, and emotions come from. The message if it as well is so bittersweet and huge props to Del Toro for being able to pull something like that off conceptually. He also really stuck the landing in the last 10 minutes.
The problem is I felt like most of the film I was unable to get fully invested. I think the issue was, there are clearly two plots going on at the same time and one of them was significantly more engaging than the other. I kept waiting for them to intertwine but they never really got further than the occasional overlap. The odds are I'm probably missing some connections so if anyone has any insight into that it may help bridge the gap I have with this film atm.
Anyways, time to wipe off these tears.
