Water Drops on Burning Rocks ★★★½

Dressed in a marvellous 70’s panache, Ozon’s frivolous chamber-piece inspired by Rainer Fassbinder’s play explores the nature of desire between four people whose sexual fluidity and obsession with intimacy leads to ultimate humiliation and despair. Shamelessly French in its erotically-charged depiction of sex but overtly influenced by the blunt mannerisms that shape German culture, the auteur's whimsical sense of drama is amplified by his effective use of the single-setting location, where the exchange of fading memories or in-the-moment glances hold the power to rekindle or extinguish smouldering fantasies of the heart.
