Nostalgia (n.): A wistful desire to return in thought or in fact to a former time in one's life; a sentimental yearning for the happiness of a former place or time.
This is a period drama. A portrait of a working-class family struggling with abuse. It's interesting to see the contrast between their happiest days and the domestic violence the family went through, to see their memories and their afflictions, their fears and their hopes.
I admire how every scene in Distant Voices, Still Lives looks like an old photo; for me that enhances the nostalgic feeling, not only of the family, but of this whole era that was marked by war.
