2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★★½

Scope: Film Club #1 ∣ Pick by: TheKing0fComedy

An enigmatic experience as any, 2001: A Space Odyssey takes you from the dawn of mankind to the dawn of mankind, and, in between, haunts you with long stretchers of classical music and silence, where the only sound heard is breathing.

In 2001, mankind is at a critical moment, as the possibility of alien and non-human intelligent life looms large. Despite that, its world is defined by emptiness. Man stands alone against the universe, it seems to say. But is that as hopeless as it sounds?

The two bookends of the film ‒ the dawn of mankind and the dawn of mankind ‒ are bound together by one single idea: that humanity is eternal. That it will persist in the face of every challenge, man-made or otherwise. That it will change, evolve, live the same cycle over and over again, but it will always be there to start over.

From the dawn of mankind until the dawn of mankind.
