Magnificent.
I’ve just watched this and it’s already one of my favourites.
I want to say this film makes it to the selective list of so bad it’s good films, that’s how it begun for me, but in all its bizarreness it’s actually really good. The camerawork is beautiful and so is the lighting; the acting is also very good.
In the very tired genre of modern takes on shakespeare incorporating current theatrical trends most fail miserably, but not this one. It resembles one of those shakespearean exercises an ever-growing number of companies are trying to pull off but, exceptionally, this one’s actually worth your while. And they’re fags!
The military setting works with the atmosphere of oppression and vigilance, of the play, and every coming of age story, and cishetnormativity in general (acab). The only controversial aspect for me might be that they all look alike, but I reckon that was an aesthetical call.
I will unapologetically call this a gem.
I will even make spanish subtitles for it so I can share it with my friends.
