    Automatons

    ★★★

Full disclosure: Am friends with the director and some of the cast and crew.

AUTOMATONS is a weird mash-up of a lot of different eras of sci-fi. You have a big streak of retro 50s aesthetics butting up against 60s post-apocalyptic panic, layered over with 70s chin stroking social commentary and culminating in an 80s practical gorefest.

It's not going to be for everyone. It's very much about the oral recitation of the horrible circumstances that brought about the bleak…

    Richard Jewell

Despite a great performance by Paul Walter Hauser as the flawed hero who got run through by the Feds because someone had to pay, Richard Jewell seems pretty cartoonishly over the top in it's portrayal of the media. And I think the media are scum!

Kathy Bates is pretty bad in this which, well, all she gets to do is cry and say "Oh, Richard" for the most part so, she probably wasn't super invested.

    The Flying Luna Clipper

    ★★★★

Beautiful, simple, digital animation with a real spark of creativity, all done on the then power house, but by today's standard, primitive, Sony MSX computer.

A wealthy investor finds himself a large Clipper plane - an aircraft that can land on water - and has it restored to near supernatural high tech proportions. His goal? To give his passengers a flight bolstered by dreams.

The film itself is populated by dream beings; anthropomorphic fruits, vegetables, animals, land masses and mythological…
