Monster Hunter

Monster Hunter ★★★½

Ravishing, widescreen cinema that breathes fire and jumps through time portals without a hint of irony. Yes, a movie can be silly and wonderful. Here's a textbook example. Nobody composes an establishing shot as well as Paul W.S. Anderson. The depth, texture, and detail in any number of his grand images makes all the Marvel movies look even flatter and duller. To me, this is what Hollywood can be when it cuts out the IP bullshit and lets loose.
