The aesthetic Woo creates for and in his action set pieces is remarkable, but there is no accompanying aesthetic achievement for the melodrama.

Chow Yun-Fat's cool will go down in history, as will the groundbreaking importance of the action; the plot will, sadly, not fair so well.
