Querelle ★★★★★

The crazy thing about Fassbinder is when you marvel at how well he was able to flourish as an artist in such a short time, and how comprehensively, and how honed his own artistic perspective was throughout his career, and then you watch some of his last movies, like Querelle or Lili Marleen or Lola, all 1981-2, and they're not even necessarily his best but the shit he does with the camera and with the color palettes and boiling his stories down to these base garish exploding compositions that work on the level of pure visual and aural suggestion and it's just some of the most insane shit I've ever seen and suddenly the supposed next step he'd take as a filmmaker if he lived past 37 becomes incomprehensible.
