Max Kearsley’s review published on Letterboxd:
One of the strangest senses of mixed feelings I’ve ever had after walking out of a film. Tenet at times feels fantastic, but at points feels like Chris Nolan has well and truely jumped the shark. Delving into anything regarding this films plot or characters starts heading into spoiler territory, so there isn’t too much I can say.
Nolan has always managed the balance between complex but understandable narratives well with films such as Inception and Interstellar, but with ‘Tenet’ it feels as though he’s tipped the scales a bit the wrong way. More worrying than that however, is the lack of heart and emotion here, with the narrative and characters feeling particularly cold, even for a Nolan film.
This is such a hard one to review and rate, but despite it ultimately being a good film with intriguing ideas, spectacular visuals and good performances, I couldn’t help but walk out feeling disappointed. Without a doubt I’d see it again, but then I’d also just rather watch nearly any other from Nolan’s catalogue.
Also Nolan really decided to say a massive fuck you to the idea of a dialogue balanced sound mix, and personally I do enjoy hearing my dialogue over big dramatic score pieces
