The Lone Ranger

The Lone Ranger ★★★★

Decided to go back and rewatch the whole movie this time. Despite a handful of issues, its just so darn fun and appealing and I just can't hate it.

We need more big budget Westerns, or stylish blockbusters like this. I know it's based on IP, but it just feels like a good ole fashioned adventure film full of shootouts, chases, character actors with dirty hats and fake beards, romantic farewells, and trains going really fast.
I've said it before but I'll say it again, the last 20 minutes of this movie is action filmmaking at its finest.

Of course I can't praise this movie without also addressing the whitewashing of casting Johnny Depp as Tonto, and furthermore his shallow portrayal rooted in dated stereotypes. Its wild that this performance made it into a movie that's about this country's heinous treatment of Native Americans.
Switch out Johnny Depp with an actual Native American actor, give Tonto a little more depth and respect, trim about 20 minutes off the movie, and you've got a classic right there.
