Maximus’s review published on Letterboxd:
While Army of the Dead has some very great moments and characters (Matthias Schweighöfer is my new celebrity crush), it always feels weirdly at odds with itself. The characters are in a race against time, but the pacing is surprisingly slow, the shallow focus takes away from a lot of the film's massive scope, and oddest of all, the two-and-a-half-hour runtime is not enough to house some of its strange Zombie/existential material. It's difficult to explain without outright spoiling the movie but there are ideas here that are either given a few seconds of screen time or quickly shown in the background that are interesting but aren't given any time to develop. There are a few sequels being developed so maybe a lot of that will be resolved in the future? As a huge zombie fan who loves to see how the mythology can grow, I'd totally watch some of those ideas continue especially given how excited Snyder sounds about them even if I didn’t fully love the movie.
