I’m glad people are really digging this and I really do hope it gets a sequel because if not..sheesh..I really wouldn’t know how to feel about this. On a technical level, it is very impressive. Not a whole lot to complain about but if I’m being honest, I do prefer the sets and costumes from David Lynch’s adaptation. I wasn’t the biggest fan of how desaturated and gray this film looked; from the color palette to the sets and costumes.…
A tremendous film all around. Absolutely adore the visual aesthetic and haunting score. Performances are phenomenal, Mark Ruffalo in particular (who is always underrated). It’s an ingenious script that really makes you think and isn’t afraid to tug at the heartstrings. I think all of the emotion works incredibly well and the final act is near perfection. It gets a tad muddled in the second act but the filmmaking craft on display is undeniably profound. A unique film in Scorsese’s prolific filmography no doubt. He’s never made anything quite like this and I respect that immensely.
Haven’t seen this in a hot minute. Been itching to revisit it. I think for what it is, Phantasm is pretty awesome. It reminds me a lot of Sam Raimi’s original Evil Dead movie in a lot of ways. The cheap, charming aesthetic and inspiring filmmaking on display. It’s a lot of fun. So imaginative and unique. Always been curious to check out the sequels..might have to do that honestly. Such great lore and The Tall Man is an incredible horror villain. Good stuff. Love me some 70’s horror.
