When I first saw this in the cinema, I overall enjoyed it. A few things bugged me (the Dr Sartain arc), but I thought it was one of the better entries into the series.
Now, after having watched it a few times, my opinion of it has gone up (bumped up by another half star accordingly) - this is an excellent Halloween sequel.
What previously bugged me - the Dr Sartain story arc - I think is a good twist, and reasonably believable. For someone who had studied Michael for such a long time (a futile attempt as he didn't get anywhere), not to mention being in awe of Dr Loomis and then taking over for him - it's not a far stretch to see him complete snap when his life's work was taken away.
For Laurie, Michael escaping was the ultimate terror - for Sartain, Michael being taken away from him was a similar thing.
The kills are good and suitably brutal - particularly the bathroom scene. Another aspect worth mentioning is the superb soundtrack, some of the tracks are truly great, particularly Wrought Iron Fence & The Shape Hunts Allyson.
So where does that leave us? If you're a fan of the original, I don't think you will be disappointed here. Just remember to complete ignore every movie apart from the first.
The movie does nods to locations & kills from the previous movies, not in a "we have run out of ideas" way, but as a homage to a series that had some very flawed entries - Halloween is back with a vengeance.
Bring on Halloween Kills.
