    Vampire's Kiss

    ★★★

A publishing executive (Nicolas Cage) begins believing that he is a vampire after being bitten on the neck by a woman he was with (Jennifer Beals), and as a result begins to act in a very strange way.
This is a very peculiar picture.
It is intentionally bad, which is made quite clear, but at the same time it doesn't always succeed in being intentionally bad.
That doesn't mean that at points it's genuinely good filmmaking, but its intentionally bad…

    Judas and the Black Messiah

    ★★★★½

An FBI agent (Jesse Plemons) hires car thief Bill O'Neal (Lakeith Stanfield) to infiltrate into the Chicago Black Panthers party, run by Chairman Fred Hampton (Daniel Kaluuya), with the two men unaware of an assassination planned for Hampton.
This is fantastic, there's no way around it.
It's rather amusing, closer to the end, Plemons' agent, Roy Mitchell, is talking to O'Neal, and says he deserves an Academy Award.
I don't think that was Plemons acting.
    I think that was him…

    Antebellum

    ★½

Author and activist Veronica Henley (Janelle Monáe), after being kidnapped, finds herself in a strange location where she has to uncover the mystery and escape before being kept there forever.
It takes almost forty minutes to formally introduce Monáe's character.
This is not at all a good thing, as the first act just lumbered along, without any true grasp as to what was really happening, and with no character to connect with.
So the protagonist being introduced with barely an…

    eXistenZ

    ★★★½

A game designer (Jennifer Jason Leigh) on the run from assassins goes with a marketing trainee bodyguard (Jude Law) into her name game, eXistenZ, to determine if it has been damaged or not.
I'm not entirely sure what to make of this.
There are many scenes in this where what's occuring isn't a hundred percent clear, but trying to piece it all together is quite fun.
Jennifer Jason Leigh is quite good as the game developer Allegra Geller, though Jude…
