2001: A Space Odyssey

2001: A Space Odyssey ★★★½

Not gonna lie, in the first half I was fully like "so far this whole thing could’ve been ten minutes long and even then very little would’ve happened and I would still be bored, this famous match cut could’ve lined up way better, film boys can bite me, the entire user base of Letterboxd is gonna hate me but I’ve made my peace with that.”
"Is this to prove that aliens have been around since the dawn of man?" -my mom
But then things started turning around? I liked the helmets that looked like gecko heads. And all the Hal stuff is genuinely amazing.
"I'm afraid. I'm afraid, Dave. Dave, my mind is going. I can feel it. I can feel it. My mind is going. There is no question about it. I can feel it. I can feel it. I can feel it."
And then all the fancy abstract avant-garde colors and eyeballs were very cool.
"It’s getting artsy fartsy." -my mom
And then creepy wide-eyed Dave baby started floating toward Earth and it was all very unnerving and profound?
In summary...I can see the appeal but if needed I could also bring myself to argue that it throws a lot of long provocative images at you without actually saying anything (not that that’s not a valid approach I guess).
Look I’m not opposed to slow pacing and I love weird shit so idk, maybe I just wasn’t in the right headspace to fully appreciate this.
"This conversation can serve no purpose anymore. Goodbye."
