MikeBoffardi’s review published on Letterboxd:
Southland Tales is dumb. It makes no sense and is WAY too long and WAY too short at the same time, and for a comedy there doesn’t seem to be any attempts at humor. I like a lot of the cast assembled here, but none are given anything even remotely good to do. Justin Timberlake narrates the film and just makes the whole thing even more confusing. The script is so bad that in Roger Ebert’s review of the film, he gave up on trying to give a summary of the film’s plot because it MAKES NO SENSE! I’ve yet to see Donnie Darko or The Box so my first impression on Richard Kelly is that he either has no idea how to direct a film or went completely insane while making this film. If I hadn’t known beforehand that this was a comedy, I would have thought it was a serious drama with a few weird (but not comedic) elements.
