Sleepy Hollow

Sleepy Hollow ★★★★

Sleepy Hollow a gorgeous example of rural horror at its most eyecandiest. It marks the end of Tim Burton's golden era; the magical period in the late 90's where all his vivid imagination was still reigned in by the limitations of reality, but practical effects had reached a level he could effectively express himself with fiendish glee.

While Johnny Depp is presently perceived in pop culture as a bit of a loon, Tim Burton brilliantly played him off as the straight man in Sleepy Hollow. His performance is pleasantly subdued, making him a perfect target for the crazies that inhabit the dour hamlet. When you cast Christopher Walken as the Headless Horseman, you can't steal the screen from that, really.

It is somber to rewatch this film nearly 20 years on and realize how much of the classic talent have passed. Rest in peace, Richard Griffiths, Michael Gough, and Christopher Lee.
